Can fax machine differentiate between fax and voice ?

Hello

I have a HP Officejet 5610xi All-In-One hooked up to my home telephone
line.

Is there a way to set it up so that it senses any incoming fax and receives
it before we pick up the phone or before the digital answering machine
picks it up (which it does after 4 rings) ?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Did you check to Owners Manual? Most Fax machines when connected
with an answering machine depend on either a ring-tone (long or short)
or on the number of rings. It is your setup, so if you are expecting a fax
make sure it is turned on to receive it. If any readers own one of these
units they may have specific responses to your situation.

No machine can tell the type of call unless it is answered. Fax
calls send out what is called CNG (Calling) tones for forty-five
seconds during the call. These tones are what the receiving fax
machine uses to detect an incoming fax. It sends out answer tones
when it picks up the call regardless of the type.

Many fax machines have an answering machine setting. If an
answering machine is plugged in to the line out of the fax machine,
the answering machine will answer all calls. During the first ten
seconds of the call, the fax machine will eavesdrop to listen for
CNG tones. If they are detected, the fax machine will interrupt the
call and start training for a fax reception. If the fax machine
does not detect the CNG tones, it lets the answering machine
continue. The same thing would happen if you answered from a phone
attached to the same line out.

Other fax machines may let you press a certain key on the phone to
tell it the call is a fax call if you answer from a different
extension.

You will have to read the manual for your machine to see what
features are present. There are also external devices which will
answer all calls and route them accordingly.

This newsgroup is for the Windows XP fax program so you should seek
further advice from machine-specific news groups or from
Hewlett-Packard.
