Fax configuration

Is it possible to have xp or it's internal computer fax
program distinguish between in-coming phone or fax
transmissions ???
I have one phone line and would like to use it to also
receive fax transmissions automatically.
I have set the fax program to receive after 3 rings and
the ansewering machine to answer after 5 rings.
The fax picks up the incoming callphone call after 3
rings and shuts down. The call never reaches the answering
machine.
Is there any way to overcome this conflict ???

I understand that a self contained fax machine has the
capability to distinguish between both transmissions and
I would like that ability via my computer.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

No. Windows XP doesn't support Distinctive Ring. You'll have to ask your
telco if they offer such a service.

Some third party hardware devices can provide a work-around:
