My HP Pavillion laptop will not boot: error msg received:
"Missing or corrupt file: System/System32/system.exe .. use start up disc."
Can F8 "Last Known Good" be used in this instance?

How is this repaired if you do not have a starup disk?

Is it possible to create a startup disk from another Win XP computer?

No, I doubt it.

Good question. If you are using NTFS, you basically have no real
maintenance tools... there's Recovery Console, and that's it. Install
SP2, or have a branded "instant restore" CD such as will be typical
with Compaq, HP et al, and you don't even have that.

But before wasting time with all that, you need to know wht this
happened; XP doesn't just eat its own code files for no reason.

As the cause could be serious data safety threat, I'd do this:

Yep. Version soup risk, though, plus may not be compatible with yours
if HP did "special" things with the OS.

Gotta admire his tech instincts though - can spot a hopeless doomed
case and run away fast enough to get clear ;-)

Since the file system.exe IS NOT part of a normal Windows XP install - you
WILL have to contact HP to see if it is installed by them for any reason.
But, I suspect it is the result of a compromised/hijacked system.
