Hi:

I'm brand new to xp. I've used 98se for the past 4 years, and
I've just set up a dual boot system for 98se and xp.
Here's my problem: I have 6 hard drives, and 2 dvd burners.

In 98se my hard drives are c to h, and my 2 burners are i and j.

When I set up xp, I started with 2 drives, then added other
drives and burners gradually.
To make a long story short, my drive letters are all screwed up.

98 xp

c (98se) (same) c (xp)
d (same) d
e changed to h
f changed to i
g changed to e
h changed to j
i changed to f
j changed to g

This is screwing me all up (in my head).
I've got a clean install of xp, with no programs added yet.

Is it possible to force xp to rename the drives, so that I can
give them the same letters that they have in 98se?

Thank you very much!!

Yes it is possible and simple to achieve.

Right click "My Computer" and chose "Manage".
Click "Disk Management" node.
On the right-hand side, right-click the disk-area (with the colored bar on
top) of the "drive" you want to assign another drive-letter to and chose
"Change Drive letter and Paths..."
From there on it should be pretty self-evident.

Good luck and have fun.

Yes, right click my computer, manage, disk management, right click the
drive, choose: change drive letters and paths. The c drive cannot be
changed.

Never mind. I just found another post that told how to do it,
and I've already been able to change drive letters back to the same as
98se.
Fortunately, I haven't added any programs to xp yet, so I didn't
have to worry about messed up drive paths in the registry.

Everything seems to be working OK.

Thanks for your time and help. However, before I saw your
reply, I had already found the answer in another post on this
newsgroup.
I made the changes and everything seems to be working OK.

Anyways, I __do__ appreciate you time and response. Wow, your
response was quick...within 10 minutes.

Thanks again.

Phil,

Thanks very much for your time and reply. However, after posting
my question, I scanned through the newsgroup, and found the answer in
another post.
I managed to change the letters, and everything seems to be
working OK.
Then I decided I better post a follow-up & let people know I had
found the answer. When I did, I discovered that you had already
responded.
Next time I'll learn to scan the newsgroup first, before posting,
to see if my questions/problems have been answered elsewhere.

Anyways, thank you for your time and response...less than 15
minutes!! I do appreciate it.

You're welcome. Glad you figured it out.

98 xp

c (98se) (same) c (xp)

You can change all but the one where the Windows folder is (your C:) and
the one initially booted - in your case the same, but may not be.

Control Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk
Management and look lower right for the graphic of the drives

R-click in a partition or on a CD drive Icon, Change Drive Letter
