Can AVG and NAV co-exist?

V

Vanessa

I have about had it with NAV. My son's computer (running XP Home)
originally came with a 6-month subscription to NAV (2002). It seemed to
work fine, so I paid for the annual subscription. Somewhere along the line
Live Update stopped working, although I could update manually. When the
subscription expired, I found NAV 2004 for cheap money and decided to
install that, thinking it would fix the Live Update problem as well. It
didn't and now the program seems to hang after the manual update. I don't
trust the program anymore.

I have EZ Trust AV on my Win98 machine (free for the first year, so I
decided to try it) and AVG on our other Win98 machine. So far, AVG is my
favorite.

Question number 1: Does anyone know a fix for my NAV problem?

Question number 2: Anticipating that I can't fix the NAV, can AVG and NAV
get along together or should I just uninstall NAV and forget about it?

If it makes any difference, we have not put SP2 on the XP machine yet. I
have it set to let me know when updates are available to download, but not
to do so automatically. I thought we should wait a bit on that. All
critical updates for XP have been installed though.

The consensus seems to be that you run one as resident shield and use
the other for on-demand scanning. You could change startup settings so
only one fires up at boot time. Last year, I ran NAV plus AVG with no
issues.

If you do file trading, I'd recommend some sort of free or low cost
anti-trojan.

Did you completely uninstall NAV before installing it again?

I honestly don't remember, but I believe I did - only using the add/remove
programs panel. I installed the new program about 6 weeks ago. The
problem with automatic LiveUpdate did not go away. The problem with the
program hanging after manual update is a new one within the past week or so.

Thank you for your response. Can you reocmmend a good anti-trojan program?
All of our machines are running SpyWare Blaster, SpyBot S&D and Adaware 6.0
as well as some form of AV program. I keep them all updated. We have a
hardware firewall, but I am the only one running a s/w firewall on my
machine. Why is another story and probably not appropriate to this group.

Check and see if there is a separate Symantec program in Add/Remove Programs
that may be called Live Update. If there is, uninstall it and Symantec, and
reinstall again. I just recently toyed with Symantec and I could have swarn
the Live Update was a separate program.

It is indeed separate. You can download the latest version of Live Update
here:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/lusetup.exe

Although, in my experience with Symantec, removing stuff and reinstalling
hardly evers sorts problems.

Live Update especially is a son of a bitch. Saying that though, this
version was only released a few weeks back. The previous version was
temperamental.
