I have DSL coming through a 4-port Linksys router
I have one other XP Home machine connected to the router.
That machine is not on all the time; it is just an "extra" machine.
The primary machine is pretty much left on all the time.
On my primary machine, I regularly run into a situation in which an
application complains that it cannot access the internet.
For instance, I run SETI@home as my screensaver.
If the machine has been idle for some time, and if SETI finishes and
wants to upload its results and get a new data set, it will frequently
not be able to, and puts a small window on the display saying so. I
discover this when returning to the machine after some time. I just
click on the "retry" and off it goes.
A similar thing happens sometimes to Outlook Express - it complains
about no network connection, and do I want to Work Offline or Try (to
connect) Again. I have to click Try Again.
Someone told me or I read on this forum that maybe the network card is
being "powered off" or "put to sleep" as part of some powersave
operation.
I have a DELL 8200 desktop (not laptop)
Here are my Power Scheme Properties:
Home/Office Desk
turn off monitor after 20 min
all else is "never"
Advanced
prompt for password when computer resumes from standby - checked
(this never happens; but then again, we do not have passwords on our
accounts)
power button on computer does shut down
Hibernate
enable hibernation - checked
UPS
currently stopped
This is just annoying, and I wonder if anyone has any
knowledge/suggestions as to if I can "fix" this and where I might look?
