Camera connected to PC but can't copy pics

I've got 3 cameras. All 3 plug into the usb and create a drive and
then via explorer I can just drag and drop files from the camera chip to
my PC. Just like any usb device.

A friend got a new camera, a Canon Powershot A590, and we plugged it in
just like the others. And rather than a generic USB drive, I get a
specific Canon Powershot drive. It opens just like a drive, and has
photos. I can change to thumbnail and see the pics. I can click on
them and view them in fax viewer too. I can delete them. I can even
right click and drag them to my desktop. Except when I release the
mouse and it says copy or move, and I pick, it don't do a thing. End
of job. Nothing moves or copies.

I have XP SP2 on this PC. He's left with the camera but I still thought
I'd ask to see if we can figure this out one day. It holds 1700+ pics
on the 4gig chip so we can wait for a while.

The manual says I have to load their software to copy the pictures. I
just can't understand that. Like I've said, I've done this with other
cameras, and know others that have done the same drag and drop without
and special tools. Really befuddles me.

Thanks.

That chip a HCSD? You may just need to load the software to make it work
right.
Yes it is a HC SD chip.
I'm getting the camera back tomorrow. It bothers me that I need
software to copy files. But the user will probably not object, its
things like Walmart etc that I'm nervous about. I guess a bit more
testing will tell.
Thanks.

Canon cameras interact with Windows in a slightly unorthodox manner. It is
necessary to load their software for the process to work properly.

I've got a Powershot and that too appears as a Powershot drive, not taking a
drive letter (which is a bit of a nuisance) - but I've never had to load
their software. Did it when I first got the camera, in my innocence, and
didn't care for it - on subsequent builds I've not bothered and have managed
to copy photos to my hard drive fine.

Have you tried *left*-click-and-drag? Or right-click-copy, then
right-click-paste on your desktop? (IIRC there's also a "MISC" folder in the
Canon drive - that's always empty, I never bother selecting that before
copying, don't know if that's relevant.)

How does this effect taking the chip to the store?
Or better yet, if its the camera, can I take the chip out and plug it
into a reader and have no issue?

IF the reader is HCSD compatible, then yes.

Thanks. All this will be elementary when I get the camera back. I'm
probably making more out of this than it is. Olorin said he had the
same issue but his actually copies. I just realized I have a SD card
slot in my laptop and if all it takes is a little reader I may buy one
for my friend. I'll test more today.

For a computer novice, a card reader is easy to understand with explorer
than some software package. I'm doing good to get them into the 21st
century and digitized pictures. They are going to Alaska this weekend
and that was the push to get a camera.

I got hold of the camera again today, and I was able to play a bit more.
On a different PC. I have a SD card reader built into my laptop and
the chip and photos work just as I would expect them too. So as far as
I'm concerned it works okay. Granted if I connect the camera it
performs oddly, but I can work around that.
Kinda had me freaked out that the camera did not install just like a
drive as most do.

Thanks for all your inputs. I knew someone out there had to have a
powershot and XP. :)

It doesn't. The flash card is in every way standard.
