Why is that my digital camera(just a very basic vivitar to get me started)
uses so many batteries. If I were to take it on a 2 week holiday with me I
would need about 16 batteries!

I use rechargables ( 2200 mh/hr ) and carry 2 sets. I recharge over night.

Digital cameras do use a lot of batteries, and your best bet is it get two
sets of rechargeables and keep one set charging at all times. You can also
reduce your battery usage by disabling the LCD preview panel, and framing
your pictures by looking through the viewfinder. Disabling automatic picture
reviews (where each picture you took is shown on the LCD panel) will make
batteries last longer, too. Lastly, flash (which you can't really avoid
using) uses a tremendous amount of batteries.
