Camera and Scanner wizard problem

I must have done something.. I have a sony DSC with a memory stick that
(when you connect up the usb and turn the camera on) used to automatically
open sony's image transfer software. That stopped working for some reason
and now even Microsoft's Scanner and Camera wizard (for transfering photos
to a file) doesn't startup..The camera connects to a USB port. When I move
the usb port that the camera is connected to, xp finds the new hardware and
says it's ready but nothing happens.. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Heres an update. I can now get a sceen that shows the actions that can be
taken (copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and
Camera Wizard) but clicking on it does nothing. It looks like the scanner
and camera wizard aint working..
Can anyone help?--

You may have "Phantom" instances of the camera in Device
Manager. UnPlug the camera, Open Device Manager (Right
Click My Computer, Left Click Manage). When the MMC
opens click "Device Manager" in the Left pane. Then Click
the View options and click "Show Hidden Devices".
In the Right Pane, locate Imaging Devices and click the +
to expand the listing. Any listings of your DSC should appear
grayed out. Right Click on each one, then choose Uninstall.
Do this until you have no DSC's listed.
Close everything, Reboot and then Re-plug the camera.

Thanks, but there is no "Imaging Devices" in the device manager... and I
couldnt find any instance of "DSC" either.. Could that be because the
connection is via a USB hub? and should I uninstall that?
I do appreciate the help. Thanks

Even with the camera installed to a Hub, the camera should be
enumerated in the "Imaging Devices" category. Once it's first
installed, that instance will stay in the category until it's manually
uninstalled.
USB has a "Quirk", where if the same device is plugged into a
different USB port you'll get a new instance in Device Manager.
This is where you end up with "Phantoms".
Using a Hub shouldn't matter, downstream devices will still be
enumerated the same way. Hubs have a maximum power draw
of 500 mA. How many devices are plugged into the Hub & does
the hub have it's own DC power supply. Also, XP by default
sets USB Hubs to enter power saving mode. (You can turn this
off by double-clicking each USB hub in the Universal Serial Bus
Controllers category. Click the "Power Management" tab and
uncheck the option "All the computer to turn off this device to
save power".
Just to verify operation & drivers, I would plug the camera into
a top-level port and make sure it enumerates and that the Twain
or Wia driver is still present.

I do appreciate your time and help. When looking at the device manager, I
dont have an "Imaging Devices" catagory. However when I plug the camera in,
the catagory for USB shows the sony dsc. I've uninstalled that and plug and
play reinstalled it for me but the camera and scanner wizard still doesnt do
anything. The screen shows up but when I click on "move files from camera to
a folder" nothing happens.
The usb hub has it's own power supply. I did turn off the power save
feature.
I'm not sure how to ensure that the Wia or Twain drivers are present. Can
you elaborate?
Thanks

Ditto here, and not to belabor the point, but there more traffic over in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.photos on the subject

I had the same problem, and found a thread referring to recently
installing Real Player. I uninstalled real player and my wizard now works
again!!!
