Camcorder not recognised on XP PC

Hi

I have been asked to transfer some footage taken on a Sony HandyCam onto a
DVD. I have tried this on a friends Panasonic DVD Recorder and it works fine
on their player. However, when I play it on mine it says the disc is not
recognised or is cotrrupt. So, I put it into my computer and the drive just
spins and whirrs and that's it.

So I decide then to connect the camera to the PC and so out comes the
booklet and I fiollow it to the letter. Put the USB in, nothing. The book
says that it ought to be recognised once the USB is connected. Nope!

How can I either get the PC to recognise the camera or get the DVD Recordeto
copy the film in a readable format?

The only downside is that the ability to transfer footage to your PC is
disabled, restricting the potential for any further editing you may want to
do at a later date.

But it does come with software to view and download (the model is a DCR
HCR14E). I thought that was the idea of cameras now, to be able to be
uploaded to PC.

Yea, puzzles me a bit too. I bought a Sony Digital Handycam, model TRV 120E
pal
here in England, a few years ago. After purchase, I found that writing back
to the Sony was disabled. Something to do with Import taxes, made it cheaper
???. However after
browsing around, I found it was possible to enable quite a few little
goodies on it. I took the chance, and performed the `surgery`. It does
everything it`s capable of now.
Just to finish, you notice in the write up it does say `disabled`.

The trouble is is that the cameras not mine. How would I go about 'enabling'
it. I assume that by saying 'disabled' it can be 'enabled'? Or is that a
pipe dream? It is so annoying as it gives software and a book with
instructions and does not mention anything about what to do if your PC fails
to recognise the camera. Well, I lie, it does, it says that you need to
unlpg the camera and then plug it in again. Duh! Is there a way to 'force'
the camera to be rocignised, like through PC settings or something?

Just one thought. Are your USBs working OK ?. With my Camcorder, you have to
switch it on for it to be recognised (in the play position, but not running,
if you see what I mean.)

Yep, USB's all working fine. I have 2 in the front of PC, tried both. I
tried it in each of the 4 I have in a hub as well as the 4 in the rear of
the PC. Everything else still works, so the USB's are OK
