That icon appears when you connect external hardware that must be
disconnected from Windows before you unplug the data cable. If you do not
intend to unplug the data cable, you can hide the icon. Right click on the
Taskbar and select Properties.
On the Taskbar tab, in the Notification Area click on Customize. Right
click on the Safety Remove Hardware entry and select always hide.
Right. I just always hide the icon. I have an external USB hard drive that
causes the icon. If I unplug the USB cable without first disconnecting the
drive from Windows, Windows does bad things. Also, I can lose data that
has not been written to the drive.
