C Drive Full - Please Help

P

Patricia Henwood

I am really not sure about this, but I believe my problem relates to my OS.

I have a Sony VAIO notebook (PCG-GR214MP - UK model) bought new in October
2001. It has a 20GB Hard Drive which is partitioned into a 9.98GB 'C' Drive
and a 8.61GB 'D' drive. The processor is a 1000 MHz Intel Pentium lll (M)
Mobile. It has 512MB RAM. My OS is XP Pro 2002 Version with Service Pack 2.

I run Office Small Business 2000 and MYOB (an accounting software package).
I have Norton SystemWorks 2002 installed. I also have Photoshop 7 installed
but I do not use it very much (all my images are on my D drive so that
doesn't explain my problem).

My problem is that, even after moving 'My Documents' to the D drive I am
told that the C Drive is full. According to 'My Computer' I have 644MB of
space left on my C Drive and 6.36GB of free space on my D Drive.

I have tried everything I can think of to remove unwanted files to free up
more disk space (the Recycle Bin is empty) but nothing seems to make any
difference.

I have run Norton Disk Optimization last night (it took about 10 hours) on
the C drive. Before I started it told me that the C drive was 'non-NTFS'
which, I understand, is incorrect. When I checked the results of the Speed
Disk Analysis of drive C it shows Total Files: 0 Fragmented Files: 0
Percentage Fragmented: 0.0%. For Free Space Fragmentation the information
is Free Spaces: 0 Free Clusters: 0 Largest Free Space: 2620. Disk
Utilization shows Bytes Used: 9.10GB, Bytes Free: 0 bytes Percent of Disk
Used: 100% Number of Folders: 0 Number of Files: 0 It then goes on to list
the 'most fragmented files' - there are 11 of these which range from 242
fragments to 90 fragments (I don't know what to do about this).

When I use 'Search' to find files larger than 5MB on my C drive I get 115
files, some of which are up to 100MB in size - mostly .pst and .dbx files. I
deleted hundreds of emails yesterday and then compacted the mailboxes but it
seems that this made no difference to the amount of space available.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Many thanks
Tricia

If you have Norton Protected Recycle Bin right click and make sure the
Norton protected files are deleted.

Thank you Ras and Ricky for your prompt responses. I don't know that I
would be sufficiently competent to run the partition software (and I would
hate to make a mess of what I've got on my C drive). I checked the Norton
Protected Recycle Bin and it's completely empty.

Very seldom would anything on the harddrive be affected by partitioning.
I've never had a problem losing anything although they always warn you to
backup first. Like I said before I usually use PartitionMagic but if you
download and do a little reading on BootItNG it should be fairly simple and
straightforward.
