I've seen the answer to this posted before, but I've never needed it on
my computer, so I ignored it.

Now my wife has inadvertently changed some setting on *her* computer,
and would like to return to the "straight through" startup (no logon
box). How can I do that for her?

Thank you for any help.

Download Tweak UI from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Then expand the Logon option and select Autologon and Check the Autologon
box.

OR

Start/Run and enter: CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
On the User tab: pick (highlight) the account you want to automatically log
on
Then uncheck: Users must enter username and password
Next click Apply and enter the password (if the account you pick has a
password)
Finally click OK until your completely out
