Bypass xp logon /error 0x80004005

okay, i've got the error 0x80004005 re: my xp upgrade
activation. I've seen solutions to make changes in the
registry etc, but I can't get by the logon screen without
getting the error. How can I save this machine without
losing my files. All the options i've tried to "R"epair
or reinstall have not worked. Can I somehow get back to
my old windows xp home and restore? anybody? please help.
