My friend says that he never had to log on to his computer when he turned it
on, that Windows XP would automatically take him into his computer. Now, his
account comes up (only one on the computer) and he has an extra step of
clicking on the account. Is there a way to bypass "log in to account" step
and directly go into Windows?

He actually did log on, but was taken automatically to the Desktop. He
has probably installed some program that required .Net 1.1 and that
caused the issue he's now experiencing. He can go to Windows Update and
update his .Net 1.1 or see:
