Buying an Epson Printer with only 1 colour cartridge

B

Blair

I am trying to buy my son an Epson printer which has 1 colour and 1 black
cartridge
I have found the C46 and the C48 do this but Comet,Currys or PC World do not
stock now.
Any suggestions where I could buy either or an alternative

Most printers are now going to separate cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges
because it is much more economical.

I had always assumed that the 3 colour cartridges were more expensive to buy
than the one cartridge with 3 colours.
Do they run out at different times?

You assumption is the opposite of most users. Common sense says that
separate cartridges are more economical, as they can be replaced one at a
time as the individual colour run out, while you must throw out a combined
colour cartridge when only one colour runs out. I gather though that there
was a recent study that found there was hardly any difference in it long
term. But still - there is also no benefit to a single colour cartridge.

Mine do.

Several seperate carts can be more expensive then the one cart but typically
they contain more ink....but it's hard to compare sometimes.

My HP printer has tiny carts compared to my old one but the ink seems to
last longer - must be more dense or something.

In my household, the magenta ALWAYS runs out first, followed by yellow...
(at least a few weeks later, sometimes much longer)... the cyan lasts the
longest. I don't think I've ever had to buy two different color tanks at
the same time.

When you but 3 colors at once, yes, compared to a 3 colored cart, but you
get more ink for the same money.

Doing the math (for me, a Canon user):
Cart OEM Clone Ink
BCI24 15.80 3.79 6 (3X2CC)
BCI6(3)32.97 6.96 45 (3x15CC)
7.5x more in in singles than a combo cart.
I don't know how Epson would count.

You might wish to consider some of the older Epson printers which used a
tricolor and a black cartridge, and some didn't even have a chipped
cartridge, allowing for easy refilling and very reasonably priced ink
replacement.

Some to consider:

640, 740, 850, 880

In the case of 3 color (CMY) cartridges, typically the three colors run
out quite near to one another, so savings is minimal in that area.

The problem with individual cartridges is that since there is only one
purge pump in the printer, each time you replace one cartridge, all the
cartridges are also purged at the same time. So truth is more ink goes
down the drain.

Thanks for the information. I actually own an Epson 880 which has given me
good service over a number of years and I was looking for a similar model.
I will investigate your suggestion
