Buying a new computer

I am planning to buy a new computer. One I am looking at has XP Professional.
What will it take to upgrade that to Vista when I am ready? What will it
cost?

That depends on what the computer has in it to begin with. Are you wanting
to run vista home basic or do you want to run premium with the Aero
interface? Will the hardware that is on the XP box support it and are there
Vista drivers available for everything you are getting.

If you aren't a real techie type person, you may want to look at a machine
with vista already on it.

Ask the OEM vendor that if you purchase a computer today with XP Pro on it,
how much would it cost to upgrade to Vista within 3 months. These upgrades
prices vary and its better to ask the vendor what their price is for the
upgrade. Or possibly buy a new computer with Vista on it. Before doing
that, I would make sure all of your software that you use is compatible in
Vista.

Duane - I started to upgrade my XP computer to Vista Ultimate. It became
obvious that I could get there, but it wasn't worth it (overcoming problems
like incompatible SCSI /RAID controllers on my motherboard) I'm having an
expert build up a PC where all the hardware will be Vista compatible. He had
a lot to say about the negative aspects of 'upgrading' with Vista that he
has faced already. If I were you, I'd buy a PC with Vista already
professionally installed - IM

You might be better buying a PC with Vista pre-installed on it. At least
that way you know everything will be compatible.

I would shy away from buying a PC with XP on it now. There are plenty of low
cost PC's available with either Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium.
Which flavor of Vista you choose depends on what you want to do with your
computer. But don't buy a PC with XP if you want Vista.

Jeffrey,

Thanks for your response. I am not a techie person and so don't understand
much of what you have said. The computer I am looking at is a Lenovo (IBM)
notebook that says it is "Vista Compable" whatever that means. My primary
use for the computer will be word processing, email and internet, PowerPoint,
and such. I travel around the world doing HIV education and need a smaller,
lighter computer and that is what I am hoping to find in this unit. Frankly,
I don't know what Vista does, but expect that applications will now all be
written for it and so the XP Professional that comes loaded on the machine I
expect will be obsolete before too long and that I why I am wanting to find
out what expense will be involved in upgrading to it when the time comes.

From what you describe, I'd suggest staying with XP Professional on
that system. You are VERY unlikely to encounter 'Vista only' software
for quite some time. Frankly, since this is going to be a 'field
work' computer travelling around the world, XP Professional might be
considered state of the art where you travel.

If your looking at buying a new laptop get it with vista already installed.
Then you know you won't have any driver problems and won't have to worry
about going thru and "update" later on. Also look at Office 2007. It has a
lot of great new features especially the new interface. Once you get used
to it you will find it much easier to use.

But also be aware that if you do decide to upgrade later, you will have to upgrade to Vista
Business, none of the Home Versions will upgrade Windows XP Pro. And, if you are not going to be
connecting to a Domain Server, you do not need to get the Pro version of XP. Home version will do
everything that Pro will do, except connect to a Server Based Network.

Not true, you can use Vista Home to clean install over XP Pro. Personally I
wouldn't want to upgrade, since there are programs that work in XP that
probably won't in Vista.

Wrong; On Home you can only have 5 networked connections, Pro has 10. Home
only allows one CPU usage, Pro allows two. Home only allows Users to be
either Admins or Limited ones, Pro has a much wider range including the use
of a Group Policy Editor. Only Pro has IIS, not Home. These are just a few.

I didn't realize the limit of 5 networked connections or the single CPU
-- both of those strike me as being more of a constraint than XP Home
supported.

If you care to give the exact model with the full model ID I may be
able to do some checking -- I know the IBM/Lenovo website pretty well

One thing that is coming up with laptops that come with VISTA installed
is that you may not be able easily to back track and install XP (even
if you buy a full retail copy) since we are running into laptop models
where the manufacturer's website has no support files for earlier than
VISTA -- odd after all the complaints that they did not have files to
upgrade to VISTA <g>
