Burning CDs in XP

Can't drag and drop files on to my CD Burner drive. Properties of drive have
General, Autoplay and Hardware tabs but then DAL and no Sharing or Recording
tabs which are on a similar drive on another computer. Can I get the
Recording tab back or has DLA (Sonicsoftware, I think) destroyed it. No
changes have been made to computer so DAL must have been installed when
computer built by HP.

Drag-and-drop is not a normal burning function. You will need
third-party software to do that, like Nero's InCD.

On another computer using XP Home SP3, files can be put on to a CD burner
drive by dragging and dropping, using the "send to" function and copying and
pasting. They are then on the drice ready for burning to CD. XP function says
"Write these files to CD". This is all without resorting to third party
software such as NeroInCD etc and writes the files in whatever format they
were in when dropped, sent or copied to the drive. There is no need to have a
disc in the drive before the writing stage. On the computer which uses DLA
(sorry, DAL was a typo) it is not possible to put files on to the drive for
subsequent wring to CD as there is no "Recording" facility/tab other than by
usung DLA.

It looks as if you weren't truly using "drag-and-drop", you were
merely putting files in a queue for later burning. There IS a
difference.

Drag-and-drop works just like copying files onto a floppy, or another
drive, and to do that will require a third-party utility.

OK, agreed my terminology was probably inaccurate but the problem is still
there. On one computer I can put the files in a queue for later burning and
on the other this option is not available. A tab marked DLA seems to have
replaced the Sharing and Recording tabs on the burner drives properties. Can
the missing tabs be recovered?

Wrong.

Drag and drop burning is supported directly by Windows XP. This is normally
enabled through the 'Recording' tab on the drive properties. The OP's
problem is that the tab is missing.

It is possible that your DLA tab has replaced the recording tab. When XP
first appeared, the existing packet writing utilities wouldn't work under XP
because the drag and drop interface was similar and XP got confused as to
which was supposed to be working. This was resolved by various utility
providers in various ways. However, my experience with the Sonic utilities
is that they don't replace XP's own utility or displace the record tab.
However, my sonic stuff is all OEM so if you are running a later version or
a retail version, your functionality may vary.

Thank you "M.I.5¾", you have got the point precisely (which is more than some
others, I must say). I think Sonic must have replaced the "Recording" tab as
it isn't there even though my Sonic stuff is also all OEM. Ah well, I'll
just have to go on using the DLA format and "Make compatible" feature. No
great hardship, I suppose.
Thanks for your help.
