I installed brand new XP PRO. My PC used to run ME.
Now when I burn a CD, burning performance is much worse
than used to be with ME.
In which group should I ask this question?

TIA,
Michael

Hi Michael,

To expand a bit on what Chris said.....If you have another burning program
installed, make sure that the WinXP burning software is disabled (start/run
services.msc and disable the imapi burning service).

What software are you using to do the burning? you need to clean off
whatever you were using in ME, then to do a final tidy up, get a
registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry
The inbuilt burning should then work within its (fairly severe)
limitations, or install a new version of your preferred software, making
sure it is an XP compatible one

Alex,
I installed XP on a brand new partition on my drive. I
did not upgrade.
I use MusicMatch, Nero, CloneCD and VCDEasy. The symptoms
I see is that HD buffer used by programs goes almost
immediately to 0% and then burning takes a significantly
longer time than with ME.
Also, with VCDEasy I see sporadic writing. Percentage
done will increment in "blocks", and not smoothly.
Similar symptom with MusicMatch BurnerPlus. The display
fails to update regularly as to which song is being
recorded or the progress within the song. Again, in ME
(As much as I hate ME), these things were smooth and
trouble-free.

This sounds to me like a burner that has got into PIO mode (with
enormous CPU overhead compared with the UDMA that most modern drives
want).

Check in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager for
IDE ATA/ATAPI disk controllers, and in that for the Primary or secondary
ones, depending on where your drive is connected. DOuble click, and on
the Advanced page ensure that the relevant panes for devices that are
present are set to 'DMA if available'.

If they are set that way but it says the device is in PIO, then there
has been a burst or errors that have caused the drivers to fall back on
that - and stick. Remedy, after checking for any cause, is to go to the
level immediately above Primary Channel (ie the master controller) and
take Action - Uninstall. Reboot for PnP to start over

Alex,
Thanks very much. The drive was in PIO mode. Nothing
appeared to be wrong (physically). But until I went in
and disconnected reconnected CD drives, PIO mode
persisted. Now it is Ultra DMA 2. Things work MUCH better.
Thanks again to all.
Michael
