burn songs in my order instead of alphabetical order, how?

I want to burn a data cd with mp3s on it. But no matter what order I arrange
the songs, they get burned to cd in alphabetical format. If I use Windows
Media Player to make a music cd instead of a data cd, I can arrange the
songs and burn them in any order I want. How can I do this with a data cd
using Windows Explorer? Any free burner that will allow me to do this?

Try rename the songs using numbers to start the names, then when they
arrange in alphabetical order they will go the way you want.
Example:
01 My Song.mp3
02 My Song.mp3

You need to rename the files with a three-digit numerical prefix: 001, 002
003,... 010, 011, etc. Or, if these tracks are the contents of full albums,
you can just create a folder for each album, put the mp3 files into the
folders, and then burn the folders to a data disc. The contents of each
folder will remain in their original sequence.

What burning software do you have besides the XP default or
how much are you will to spend. Look at www.sourceforge.net
and search Google. You can get a plug-in for WMP to burn
MP3s. I think MusicMatch will do it.

A data CD won't be in tracks and will sound terrible when
played back.

What do you mean by that? If you burn a data CD full of mp3 files, that
data disc will play the mp3 files back precisely as they sounded when played
from the hard drive.
