Queires on CD Burning

H

Hari

Hi,

I have windows XP professional (SP2). I have Roxio Easy CD creator 5
installed in my computer.

I have to burn 150 songs which amount to 690 MB and I want to burn it
within a single CD (Recordable). All the song are stored within
Specific sub-folders

I have 2 queries:-

a) If I want an external CD/DVD player (standalone player, not
connected to my computer) to recognize that my files in the recorded CD
are actually audio files then do I have to burn the CD using "Make a
music CD" option? (Audio CD) If I use the option "Make a Data CD" then
would the external DVD player be able to play the audio files (would
CD/DVD player be able to play from sub-folders)?

b) If I use the option Make a music CD, then the player doesnt allow me
to add more than 99 tracks to my audio project. "No more tracks can be
added to the track list. Delete one or more existing tracks before
adding another track." Is this normal? Is there any CD/DVD burner which
would allow me to burn more than 99 tracks in to a CD. (If I burn 99
tracks it oocupies just 400 MB out of the 700 MB).

c) Even if I overlook point b) and start recording only 99 tracks then
the message I get is "The CD in the CD recorder either does not have
sufficient free space, or the project size is too large to fit on a CD.
Insert a blank CD or a CD with enough free space to record the
project." Note, the 99 tracks amount to just 400 MB (my CD has capacity
for 700 MB) and if I use the same CD to record the song as data it
doesnt complain.

Please guide me. (Please let me know in case I need to post those to
some other forum).

A couple of points to consider before one can really answer
your questions. The most important is what playback format
is needed --- CD audio or MP3? Second, what format is being
used to store the songs on the computer, i.e., cannot be PCM
WAV (44.1 kHz stereo) since the file size is too small unless,
third, the 150 songs are approximately 15 to 20 second sound
bites. Re-post with more information about this project.

It depends. Read about your CD player. Will it play mp3s? If not, it will
only play standard music. Most CD players that CAN play mp3s will also play
standard music. If your player won't play mp3 music OR if you choose to
burn music in standard format you would select Make a music CD.

If your player CAN play mp3 format music AND you wish to put lots more music
on that CD, choose Make a Data CD and copy the mp3 songs to the CD. As an
example: in standard music format you could get about 15 songs on that CD.
In mp3 format you could get well over a hundred songs on that CD... but it
WON'T play on another CD player unless that player CAN play mp3 format
music.

If you burn the CD as standard music you can get about 74 MINUTES of music
on a CD. If you burn the CD as mp3 data format you can get about 650 MB of
music on a CD. Note that music CDs are limited by playing TIME whereas mp3
music CDs are limited by the amount of DATA without a direct relation to
playing time.

That depends on the other devices you want to play the CD's on.

(Assuming the songs are MP3's already)

Some audio CD players support MP3 as well as standard CD audio. IF the
other devices DO NOT support playing MP3s, then you have to make an
'Audio' CD.

I'm not sure about Roxio 5, but Nero (and probably others) support
dragging the MP3 files into the compilation, and it will then convert
them to CD audio automatically. This should them be playable on (just
about) any standard CD player.

If the device does support playing MP3s, it would be a data CD you
wanted. I would look through the instructions that came with the device
because the CD player my son had, required the MP3s on the CD to be
contained within a specific file structure.
b) If I use the option Make a music CD, then the player doesnt allow me
to add more than 99 tracks to my audio project. "No more tracks can be
added to the track list. Delete one or more existing tracks before
adding another track." Is this normal? Is there any CD/DVD burner which

Since it does really sound like MP3's (as each are 3-5 megs in size,
generally). I don't know if audio CD's can have tracks numbered over 99,
BUT, if you are making a standard audio CD, you'll only be able to fit 80
MINUTES anyway.....20 4 minute songs.....80 minutes regardless of the
size of the MP3s that are the source.
c) Even if I overlook point b) and start recording only 99 tracks then
the message I get is "The CD in the CD recorder either does not have
sufficient free space, or the project size is too large to fit on a CD.
Insert a blank CD or a CD with enough free space to record the

See the answer to B.

Thanks a lot to Darrell, Halleck and Dan for their responses.

The source files are in MP3 format and the player on which these files
are going to be played is also a MP3 compatible player. (I want to burn
in MP3 format only as one can store more songs that way and I would be
using this CD only on MP3 players).

It seems that I can safely proceed ahead with burning as a Data CD. My
only concern is can my songs be within sub-folders ? Actually I have
filed the songs within different sub-folders depending on the name of
the band, so that in future if I need to take back up of this CD I can
copy specific bands only. Hence, am not very comfortable in having all
the 150 MP3 songs within the root folder itself. The songs are going to
be played on my friends MP3 player which is not with me right now, so I
cant test if sub-folders would work. Please let me know if anybody has
experience in playing MP3 music on MP3 players within a sub-fodler
structure.

Using sub-folders works just fine on most mp3 players. You can either
research the material that came with your mp3 player or just gamble 25 cents
(about the cost of a CD) and burn it with sub-folders and see how it works.

Thanks, I just got a confirmation from my friend and it seems that
sub-folders will work. (Actually I had to burn more than a few CD's and
it takes time as well).
