Bullets- what did I change?

I am using Word 2007. If I typed my lines using only return key to format
and then use the icon to set the indented list, I could use tab to
successfully create another level of the list. Now I have tried to do that
using the bullets and I can get only one level. If I use tab, the bullet
stays where it is and the text moves over. I want the bullet to change to
the next style and advance with the text. How do I do this?

To add to what Suzanne has said, even if that option is cleared, you can
change numbering levels by using Alt+Shift+left/right arrows.

Which is what I usually do except when I'm working in a document that is all
outline numbering, in which case I change the AutoFormat As You Type setting
temporarily.
