bullets and numbering format is wrong after installing SP3

After the auto updates installed MS Office 2003 Service Pack 3 my documents
are not formatted properly. The numbering is gone for the most part. I had
doc that looked like the following. (sorry the tabs are not correct but I
tihnk you can get the point)

1. Subject
1.1. Sub Subject
1.1.1. Detail
1.1.1.1. Sub Detail
Now they roughly look like this.

1. Subject
Sub Subject
Detail
Sub Detail

I rolled back my computer to before the update and the docs are fine. The
problem is this is a work computer and I can not turn off the auto updates.

Was numbering set up with styles? If so, does pressing Ctrl+Q (with the
insertion point inside a numbered paragraph) bring the numbering back?

Pressing Control +Q does turn on some numbering, but not in the format it was
created, which is exactly as James asks about below. Instead it simply
numbers every paragraph with the next number (2,3,etc.). When I select the
indent to move it to the next level, the numbers disappear completely
instead, although the form field shadow can be seen if I use the left arrow.
What feature of SP3 do I need to reverse, please, and Thank you!

I got a very similar problem when I open an existing word document after
install SP3. With in that document, some pages show outline numbering
correct but some pages did not show bullet numbering. After my investigate,
you should try right click on that line with outline number and click menu
"Bullets and Numberings" , it will be numbered tab, change to outline
numbered tab and choose the style that you want it to be. This one action
will correct all the missing bullet number for you. I doubt that the word
document was created with some error long time ago but it did not show up
when we use Offfice 2000 or Office 2003 SP2.

I can get the bulllets and numbering dialog box just fine, but the selection
doesn't allow for the sample
2
2.1
2.2
2.2.1
2.2.2
etc. It numbers instead sequentially, e.g. 2.1, 3.1, 4.1

I didn't create this document and I think the creator may have overwritten
the original styles.

Please assume I am a real novice and try to explain again?

Does this solution solve the issue for all pre-existing documents? I too am
experiencing this issue and have over 100 documents that this issue occurs
and over 100 users that are now SP3
