Built-in microphone not working (Sony Vaio fs990)

Can't get the built-in mic to work. It's not muted, and I've tried the
sound recorder and other devices (including the "test hardware" option
in the audio control). I just don't get it to work at all. Any idea
what could be wrong? I've tried everything (or so it seems). Thanks!
 
Look in the hardware devices window, and see if you see it. Or, call its
name using the built in microphone.
