I had a system shudown completely and in the error log I
got a message that said: "The computer has rebooted from a
bugcheck ..." and had a dmp file generated. Any idea
what's up. How can I look at the dmp file? Thanks

You cannot troubleshoot with the dump file.
Look to your log event in system part.

You have an event 6009 & 6005 when the PC boots.
What do you have after ?
I'm sure you have some red event (error that you need to
correct) and perhaps some warning in yellow.

Troubleshoot your system with your event viewer.
Use the support.microsoft.com web site for the KB.

Find when your computer crash : when you use word ?
Another application like virtualdub or zonealarm ?
Look your registry in
HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentv/run &
HKCU/software/microsoft/windows/currentv/run
any strange programs is loaded at startup ?

Anti virus is update ? (take care of virus that update
anti virus with a false & old version)

If you cannot troubleshoot (it arrives), look for hardware
problem & remove all you can 1 by 1 : network card, sound
card, the 2nd RAM, the 2nd HDD ... You need at the end,
the minimum : Motherboard, video card, ram, cpu, fan for
cpu, keyboard, & the screen.

Good Luck.

Well I dont agree with Yann. The only thing I would be interested in is:

1. What the STOP code was?
2. What was the last software/hardware change made to the machine for the
event started happening?
3. The memory.dmp is in %WINDIR% and you can view it with the debugging
tools on microsoft.com but unless you have debug skills it wont mean much to
you.
