Bug in XP Security Center?

After booting, the Security Center reports everything OK. Sometime
later - several minutes - it reports that there is no Firewall. The
Windows Firewall reports that it is on and the properties of the
Internet connection reports the same.

Experimenting, I ticked the "Don't Allow Exceptions" Windows Firewall
option and this satisfied the Security Centre.

The system is running XP Home Edition + SP2 + subsequent updates. AVG
Free Edition AV software. No separate firewall software. ADSL
broadband connection.

Any clues as to how to fix this anomalous behaviour?

Turn off the Security Center reporting things. And I'd install a
firewall that has the ability to block nasties both ways. Trusting MS
with your computer security is like trusting the Bush administration to
with anything.

LOL! Yeah, MS has a horrible record when it comes to security, so it's
no wonder that their "Security Center" gives inconsistent and outright
wrong reports. Only a fool would rely on MS for computer security in
the first place, especially considering their horrendous security track
record.

To stop its anomalous behavior, disable it.

LOL! I'm not trolling. I have the security center turned off myself,
don't used the Windows firewall turned on. I practice what I preach.

I can't help you with fixing the issue at hand, but the security center
is nothing more than a nag. No matter what it says you must still check
to make sure AV and firewall are running ok. So in that sense turning
it off (through services) or telling it not to monitor the firewall is
not hurtful.

As to using the windows firewall there are better options. It is not
that easy to configure and only protects against inbound threats.
Something already on the system, some malware you installed without
realizing it, can still "phone home". Better to use one of the good 3rd
party firewalls which monitor inbound and outbound. There are several
free ones that work well from Sygate, Zone Alarm and Kerio. Each also
has a pro version for a fee with more options. You should consider
using a different firewall.
