I received a message out of nowhere telling me that my
HPpavilion ze4400 laptop had a buffer overrun. It told me
to connect to www.patchwindow.org to correct the problem.
When I got there I received a sales pitch for a product
but was unable to locate where to go to solve the buffer
overrun problem. Can you help me?

That is a spurious advertising message, aiming to detach you from money
in return for doing nothing that you could not do from Windows Update.
And it most probably has not detected anything at all, nor even tried
to.

You should go to Network Connections, right click the one you use for
the Internet and take Properties. On the Advanced page check 'Protect
my computer. . .' to turn the Firewall on. Then get critical updates
from Windows Update (then in a few days install Service Pack 2)
