budget 19" CRT

Now that LCD monitors are so popular, have CRT prices dropped to the point
that I can get a decent 19" CRT for under $200, or am I dreaming? Do any of
you have one in that price range that you have been happy with? If not,
where is the current sweet spot for a budget 19" CRT? Thanks for any advice
you can offer.

Newegg has the Samsung SyncMaster 950B (19") for $199 shipped. That's a
reasonably good monitor for a very good price!

Are these things quick enough to play games on nowadays? Been interested in
one for a while but was put off by the response times last time I looked (12
months or so ago).

Cheers, Shawk

Sorry, I'm not a gamer. But I've never been aware of any reason to be concerned
about response time for a CRT. TFTs are another matter altogether since the
lower priced ones often have insufficient response time for some games.

Refresh rates at higher resolutions might be a CRT concern for some, but even
the lower priced monitors seem to be OK for most uses now.

Viewsonic makes some very reasonably priced, good quality CRT's. I have a
A90f (two years old). Refresh rate at 1024X768 is 85, at 800X600 is 120.
More than enough for gaming. I prefer CRT's to LCD's for playing games, and
for photo editing.

News flash, that's not an LCD monitor. But just FYI, a $199 19" LCD
monitor probably wouldn't be fast enough to play "games". Here's my vote
for a nice flat screen CRT.
http://tinyurl.com/slxq It does 1280x1024 @ 85hz I picked mine up with a
$40 rebate. A little patience goes a long way....

Yes, I bought one at a thrift shop for $15 in perfect condition. The
guy obviously didn't know what he had.

Shop around.

CRT? Damn, I should read these posts more carefully. I'll stand in the
corner with my head hung in shame. Apologies all. Shawk.

btw, Cory asked for CRT (cathode ray tube), so those answers bears on
that.

I have two LCD and two CRT. Only thing I like about the LCDs are the
size. But, (sigh) I do like that a lot.
Color abilities are down on LCDs. A Matrox Parhelia (10bit color)
should be wasted on a LCD (8-bit, or 6-bit color for faster).

I recently saw a 19 inch CTL 910TF advertised by a local retailer for
200 $US. I'm *very* pleased with my 1.5 yr-old one with one caveat:
it has a anti-reflection-coated screen, but it's quite shiny so the
slightest touch leaves an objectionable fingerprint and it (like most
screens, IMO) reflects too much light if you have lights behind you.
(Mine also has a minor bug in that the on-screen menu is scrunched 2:1
in some resolutions.)

There seems to be two kinds of screens: Shiny ones which let you see
the phosphor dots with great clearity and dull (seemingly with a
finely-ground glass) ones which don't look quite as sharp/bright but
which are better (IMO) if you must have lights, windows, etc., behind
you. The latter kind are hard to find and you can't tell which is
which without seeing them.
