BSOD Kernel_data_inpage_error win32k.sys

M

Mike Castleberg

HELP! Yesterday my machine (XP SP1) started periodically crashing and
rebooting. I get a BSOD saying Kernel_data_inpage_error and referencing
win32k.sys. Once I saw it mention aspi.dll as well. Also, I have seen one
at least one occasion this error:

System Process
C:\Windows\System32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code
128. blah blah something about shutting down in 60 seconds and then -
Shutdown initiated by NT/AUTHORITY SYSTEM

I've googled this and haven't found anything that applies to my system. A
virus scan came up empty and I don't have any "phantom shares" in my
registry. Does anyone have any ideas? The first time it happened my
machine did the error-reporting thing and Microsofts page said something to
the effect that Windows temporarily couldn't read from my hard disk and it
shouldn't happen again but if it does to contact my hard disk manufacturer.
I've already done a Repair install with my XP SP1 cd thinking that would fix
whatever damage had been done to my OS but it didn't help. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks.

If you would have put RPC in your google search you would have found the
Blaster Worm.
Here's a way to fix:
1st to stop the RPC error so it doesn't interupt you while your making
repairs:
Start | Run | services.msc /s
Scroll down to "Remote Proceedure Call (RPC)" NOT (RPC) Locator
Right click and select properties
Under the "Recovery" Tab change all failures from "Restart the Computer" to
"Restart the Service"
This will keep the RPC from coming up.

Disable msblast.exe in task manager.
Ctrl+Alt+Del | Processes | Right click msblast.exe and click "End Process"

Download the Blaster Security Patch at:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Download AdAware & Spybot S & D:
www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
www.safer-networking.org/

Disconnect from the internet

Run AdAware & Spybot
Run the Security Patch you downloaed earlier.

Make sure you have a firewall and AV software enabled and updated.
As long as you downloded and ran the patch above Blaster shouldn't come back
but there are plenty of others that can find your computer in minutes.

Change the RPC back to "Restart the Computer" the same as you did above.

Reconnect to the Internet and download the rest of the Microsoft Update
Security Patches.

The BSOD could be caused by your disk going bad.
After you get rid of the blaster driver, if you keep seeing BSODs, you may
want to consider trying to replace the hard disk on the machine.

hmmm, usually the RPC shutdown is due to Blaster.

It's worth a call to Seagate anyway.

You say it started again after a reinstall? Without ever connecting to the

shouldn't happen again but if it does to contact my hard disk
manufacturer.
I've already done a Repair install with my XP SP1 cd thinking that
would
fix
whatever damage had been done to my OS but it didn't help. PLEASE
HELP!

Thanks.

Mike
