BSOD but runs in Safe Mode

Currently my PC won't boot up - in fact there is not even any display!

The history is that for a few months it kept failing with BSOD
(various errors)
But it would run without problems in Safe Mode.

I decided to reinstall WinXP, but on entering the Product key I got
another BSOD!
Since then powering on the PC gives nothing on screen. The monitor
power light stays yellow (stand by).
On a few occasions when turn it on I hear a tone (BIOS) a long tone of
about 10 secs then a puase of 3, then 10 then 3 etc etc.
I have swapped the video card for a good one and also swapped around
the memory, all with no change.

I have yet to check the PSU voltages.

Any advise would be greatfully received

Thanks
Nigel

Swap in a known working power supply and try again. If NG, disconnect all of
the hardware you can, mouse, keyboard, hard drive, optical drives and boot.
Do you get a POST screen at all? If not, you probably have mainboard fry.

I wouldn't think it's the mainboard as it's giving you a bios error code
properly.
do a search on the beep codes it would tell you much more.

Could also be that the electrolytic condensators on mobo are dead.
This is very common culprit. Check if any of them are swollen or leaking.

That would be nice with salt and vinegar!

Thanks to all for your responses.

I will check the PSU voltages and if down I will swap it out.

The BIOS beep code only occurs one in about ten times whn power on so
it's not consitent. The display does not come on at all. The power
light on the monitor always stays yellow (i.e., never goes to green)

Thanks
Nigel
