I have a dsl connection and when I am browsing the
internet I can go thru sites with no problem and after
about 5 or so the computer stops receiving data for about
a minute and then starts back up

it might be your dsl connection, sever over loaded, or it
could be something in your pc trying to send or recieve
something.

Your OS might be freezing while looking for a DHCP server
which DSL ISPs don't normally use. Try setting your NIC
to "specify an IP address" and put in a non-routable IP
(10.255.255.10, subnet mask 255.255.255.0). This gives the
OS a location to look for the DHCP server, when it can't
find one it will stop looking immediately and the OS won't
hang.
