Browsing pictures with Internet Explorer

Previously I could sort through my downloaded pictures by
clicking on them to open them in Explorer. When I clicked
on another it would replace the previous one without
opening a new window. But something has changed. I have
the file options set to open jpg's with Explorer but when
I click on a second one (or third, or fourth...) it opens
a new Explorer window. Anyone know how to set it not to
do this? To just replace the previous one? Viewing and
sorting is much harder when I'm getting twenty some
windows just to make a quick check through to see which
pics I currently need.

It didn't help. I get an error message saying "Cannot
find the file ... (or one of its components). Make sure
the path and filename are correct and that all required
libraries are available."

If I close the message and try to open another picture, it
still opens a new browser window and displays the error
again.

Don

I'd done that, Don, but thanks.

Looks like 199292 isn't accurate for version 6.x.

Correct entries are:

Application used to perform action:
"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome
and
Use DDE: checked
DDE Message: "file:%1",,-1,,,,,
Application (under DDE): IExplore
DDE Application Not Running: (leave blank)
Topic: WWW_OpenURL

Found this by looking at JPE on a whim.
6.x. puts JPG under JPEG.
But the JPE entries should be the same settings and
luckily hadn't been touched by whatever altered my JPEG
and GIF setting.

Thanks everyone!

Don,

OP hasn't disclosed the OS involved. Things may be different for XP.

E.g. here is what I see instead:

ftype | find /i "shimg"
emffile=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
giffile=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
jpegfile=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
Paint.Picture=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
pjpegfile=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
pngfile=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
TIFImage.Document=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
wmffile=rundll32.exe D:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
</example>

For these, Folder Options shows
- DDE message:
- DDE Application: shimgvw
- DDE Topic: System

I believe that these defaults can be restored by Run...
(e.g. press Win-R and enter:)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

Of course then if users have other software which wants
to take over *some* of those entries they better have
some way to restore those exceptions.

In any case that setting allows images to be launched in
Windows Picture and Fax viewer
More images can be dragged to that window.
There is a toolbar at the bottom which allows
such a set of images to be cycled through
(among other operations which may be applied
to them individually.)

Good point. I suppost that with the next OS being a couple of years away, I
should upgrade to XP. I know some of the differences between XP and 9x, but
could use more hands-on experience.

Regards,
Don
