Browsig problem - about 1 in 10 pages just says "Page not found" - HELP!

Hello there,

As an IT support person I am reasonably tech savvy, however I cannot fathom
what is causing this.

About 1 in 10 internet page requests will result in "This page cannot be
displayed".
It's driving me absolutely NUTS!!!!

Sometimes I can go press the browser buttons backwards and then forwards and
it will resolve the problem.
Sometimes I press refresh and then the page appears.
This is really frustrating as it occurs when doing important transactions
sometimes which ruins the process.

I have run various software apps (I have an up to date Norton 2002 security
running).
When I use "Spybot - Search and Destroy" the only thing I get rid of that
sometimes comes back is "DSO Exploit".

Note that I did try Firefox in case it was a browser problem, but basically
I do get the same problem but the error message is slightly different. It
occasionally shows a dialog saying "This document contains no data" (but I
think this is only when submitting a form - other times it just acts like
you have not clicked a link).

I use my laptop through a router but this cannot be the cause of the problem
as I have other PC's on the network that are not effected by this problem.

When on earth could be causing this problem that has been there for a few
months now?

If you can help then please please do!

One thing looking through my installed programs is that I have installed
Visual Studio.net trial along with an SQL server trial. Could this be
related.

i've had this problem recently myself, and got rid of it.. the only problem
is that i can't remember exactly HOW i did it!! the best i can do is tell
you what i did do, while trying to fix it.

i'd reccommend you download HijackThis
(http://www.soft32.com/download_19015.html), and do a scan for any
suspicious services/objects. i'd be careful, and keep a search engine handy,
though, since HijackThis makes no distinction between threats and normal
system processes it finds. also, do a check in msconfig/services.msc for
suspicious processes you don;t recognize.

also, check your running processes for any programs useing a LAN connection
to operate. sometimes, conflicting proxy-server type programs, such as spam
filters conflicting with netowrk monitoring software for example, can cause
some wierd things.

Thanks for that but this did not work. Remember that I am also getting a
similar problem when I use Firefox browser also. Just that firefox handles
it better.

I have tried hijack this before but I will try it again and let you know but
right now this thing is still driving me crazy.

Any more suggestions would be welcome. Am I allowed to phone Microsoft for
this soft of problem with my XP Pro licence?
