Hi, hope someone has some ideas.
Neither IE or Firefox can display web pages. All other connections are
working fine.
The virus program (Mcaffee) gets it's updates as well as automatic Windows
updates and anything else that connects in the background.
I can ping anything just fine.
I have a valid IP, which has been flushed and renewed several times.
Have done the obvious, rebooted the DSL modem and router.
I can't get into the router setup though because it uses a browser.
Flushed all cahe and temp files from IE.
Firefox is a fresh install, only downloaded and installed in an effort to
repair this.
Any help would be so much appreciated.

You need to tell us what you see on the screen when you use your browser to
open www.google.com or 74.125.43.103 (no "www" or "http" in front!).
You should also tell us what you see when you ping these two addresses from
a Command Prompt: www.google.com and 74.125.43.103. Don't do it from the
Start/Run box - it has to be a Command Prompt!

I am at work now so I cannot remember the exact error messages. In IE I
believe it's something like "cannot display web page...etc"
Pinging from the command prompt gives a full reply, averaging about 60ms or
so.

Edward,
In Control Panel
Internet Settings
[LAN Settings]

are the following settings UNticked?
[_] Auto detect settings
[_] Use auto config script
[_] Use a proxy server for your LAN

or if:
[Y] Use a proxy server for your LAN

then in [Advanced...]
under 'Servers', 'HTTP' and 'Secure'
is the 'Address:Port' valid and live, and
under 'Exceptions'
'Do not use a proxy server for:'
[ 192.168.1.1 ]
(or your IPCONFIG > 'Default Gateway' address)
