Browsers want to open outlook intead of windows mail

Windows mail is default mail program, but when I right click an item to send
as an attachment the outlook express set up wizard opens. Sometimes it asks
for a profile to be created but I don't know what that does.

Shouldn't think so. Outlook EXPRESS doesn't exist in Vista...

You probably did a default install of Microsoft Office and now Outlook (NOT
Outlook Express) is the default mail program. Click Start | Default
Programs.
