browser is not able to run Java Applets

I am new to XP ans apparewntly have SP2 loaded. When I try to open some sites
I get this message - 'Your browser is not able to run Java Applets. You will
need to obtain a Java-capable browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Netscape Navigator/Communicator ' ......help, how do I fix this.

Microsoft Java VM:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/msjavx86.exe (build 3805). After installing the
above, visit http://www.windowsupdate.com/ and update to build 3810
(important)
