Browser causes 100% CPU utilization; sluggish

IE6-W98SE-256MB-20GB-500MHz Desktop

IE6 uses permanently 100% CPU Utilization (Sysmon.exe), is sluggish, scrolling
'sticky' since upgrade from IE5. Autocomplete takes 1 minute!

My laptop, same upgrade, same config but 'only' 233Mhz is perfectly fine, IE6
avg. 35% CPU utilization and fast! Autocomplete is faster than typing!

Both IE6 reinstalled, no difference.

Any clues?

Check for parasites.

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

If you find this one, get the removal tool. It's a bad one.
CoolWebSearch - CWS http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/cws/

Direct Download: If the site is not available.

Problems: Google/Yahoo/MSN redirections. Massive IE slowdown, especially
when typing text into forms.
Redirected any URLs starting without 'http://' or 'www'.

Thank you, first things I did was to run CWS/Spybot/Adaware etc to no avail.
Problem persists since Jan 2003 on the Desktop.
Laptop (233Mhz!) goes like a bomb, no trouble.

Defragged, Norton System Works, WinCleaner, the works.

Also, I notice that some progs that use modules of IE6 work do work fast(er)
e.g. SurferNetwork Player, SlimBrowser.

Also, Favourates are sticky and respond after say 1 second.

What other setting could be tested?

Do you think this KB article 251787 "Delayed response when editing IE Forms and
OE may take a long time to start" ref. P Stores registry re-install useful? The
operation seems risky for an amateur.

Q) KB article 251787 "Delayed response when editing IE Forms and

A) Not unless you have this problem with is a symptom of parasites also.

Check what is running at startup.
This site will help identifying the processes.

START-UP APPLICATIONS
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
The complete list
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_all.php

You will find this note at the URL listed above.
Search for CPU you will find other resources.

Alogserv.exe
From McAfee VirusScan for logging scanning activities. In some cases, if
left running it can cause CPU % usage to go between 5-95% or go to and stay
at 100%. Disabling it impacts on the reported last scan date. It is reported
to cause jerky graphics response in many games. As of version 6, this is a
critical component of McAfee and disabling it can cause a PC to lock up

Did you run AdAware with the latest definition table?

If you found nothing then check with this forum for help on new variant.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the below location:

Sign in, then copy and paste both files in your message.

Go into the security and reset the security to default. I don't know if
this will help, but it did help me.
