IE Sticky, autocomplete slow

On an 500 MHz AMD K-6 3D / W98SE / 256 MB desktop I installed IE6 upgrading from
very fast (but outdated) Netscape 4.8
IE is working allright - but very hesitant, sticky, sluggish.
Autocomplete takes almost one minute.
Favourates sluggish as well

Defragged, disabled NAV2004, cleaned Reg, empty Temp, set Internet Options
sparsely, checked for Spyware, all OK.

Just testing installed Mozilla 1.6, same sluggish behaviour!

Installed both apps on a Compaq laptop and they run like lightning.

Any ideas on this behaviour?

Hi,
Did you run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot? Maybe post a HijackThis log to
the HijackThis forum at http://forum.aumha.org
HJT info and download http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

I would also try deleting the TIF and History folders.
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm And, I keep the TIF folder set to
a max size of 60MB. A larger cache isn't necessarily better.

Thank you. Yes, done literally all that, no hits, no improvement. I use IE6.0
2800.11c0 + SP1 + several Q..
IE loads allright, but response in getting pages in is no where near that of NS
4.8
Mozilla 1.6 shows same stickiness in performance, opening pop-down boxes,
scrolling pages. Hosts file de-/activated make no difference. TIF set to 50MB,
emptied.
Reduced processes running to min. 10 necessary, monitored by PRCView.
When IE starts and runs SYSMON shows 100% kernel proc usage. Is that normal?
When closed it goes down to 10%.
AMD K-6 proc, could that make a diff?
4 MB shared mem for video card?
Any setting in MSCONFIG?

Maybe try a clean boot- see if something else is interfering with IE?

What type of internet connection- cable, DSL, dial-up?
