Broken XP

My daughter's Dell computer stopped accessing the web a
few month's ago (Can't ping her IP, but can ping
everything else). I've spent a lifetime going through
newsgroups and microsoft articles, but nothing will
restore it. She disclaims installing/deinstalling
anything. Norton's SystemWorks is current.

I think I need to reinstall XP, but she upgraded from ME
to XP at college last year, and can no longer find her
original CD.

Where do I go from here?

As an aside, Norton System Works can not be current if she has been unable
to get on the internet for a few months!

Usually Larry the culprit behind the symptoms you are experiencing are usually caused by faulting firewall software such as Norton Internet Securities or such the likes.
Try uninstalling these applications.

Where do I go from here?

What does "...Can't ping her IP, but can ping everything else" mean?
WHO is trying this ping, and from where? Is it that she can't ping
her own IP address, but can get ping replies from elsewhere? Or YOU
can't ping her? Or somebody else (professor ping in the library with
the candlestick?).

Other questions: Is it just Web access she is lacking? Can she still
send/receive e-mail? Use newsgroups?

See what I'm getting at? Your information isn't really good enough to
get even a half good estimate at the problem. What you have provided
just clouds the picture even more. I have no idea, since depending on
some of the answers to what I asked could either point to hardware OR
software.

You need to be much clearer here.
