Broadband Cable Connection Problem

Hope someone can help me, I've just had a broadband
optusnet cable internet connection installed in my house,
problem is when I try to access the net through internet
explorer I recieve the following message "cannot find
server or DNS error". My Optus provider tells me that the
cable modem is working properly and that my computer is
defaulting to a 169.254 etc I.P address and this needs to
be fixed in the registry. I am running Windows XP ver 5.1
In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" properties box my
settings have been set to "Obtain I.P. address
automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address
automatically" and "DHC Enabled"
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

169.254.xxx.xxx is a private address range assigned automatically when
you cannot connect to a DHCP server to get your IP address from it
assigned to you. It's call APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing).
"How to Use Automatic TCP/IP Addressing Without a DHCP Server"

Presumably you have TCP/IP installed probably because you had a dial-up
connection before. Did you ever define a LAN (Local Area Connection)
connectoid to use your NIC (Network Interface Card) to connect to the
cable modem? In the Network Connections applet in Control Panel, use
the "Create a new connection" wizard in the left pane. Do a manual
connectoid definition and select to create a LAN connection (I am
assuming you have a NIC to connect to an Ethernet LAN even if the "LAN"
is a single-point connection from your computer to the cable modem or
router).

Try to delete the current network connection and re-boot your computer. If
that doesn't work, try un-installing your cable modem, and re-installing it
in the hardware device manager.

Thanks all for your suggestions, I have tried all of this
to no avail. I am at a loss as to why I can't connect.
Maybe a clean install of win xp is required.
Thanks again.

You never did mention how you are actually connected to your ISP? Is
your NIC connected directly to the cable modem? Do you go through a
router or switch? If so, what happens if you bypass the router or
switch and connect directly to the cable modem?

Got firewall software running on your host? Tried disabling it? Got a
firewall within the router? If you have a router, tried resetting it
(might be a pin-hole for a paper clip to push a button)?

Tried power resetting the cable modem (disconnect power for 1 minute and
then reconnect)?

Don't know if you have tweaked the TCP parameters in the registry. Have
you tried resetting them to the standard configuration? Use the netsh
command in a DOS prompt window:

netsh int ip reset name=<logfile>

Got any 3rd party dialers still installed, like AOL, Netzero, Juno, or
whatever?

Try discarding all current IP leases and try getting a new one:

ipconfig /release *
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
