yep, totally and completely remove norton.

use either AVG or AVAST.
both free and excellent virus programs.

you need to download the special uninstaller from norton to remove it.

How stupid that the computer comes with vista and norton and they dont work
together...you think microsoft or norton would have fixed by now!
Thanks anyway..was hoping it was an easy fix..

Norton is likely causing your problem.

Replace Norton with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling Norton is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it. If it doesn't solve the problem, get rid of Norton anyway. Norton is
known to cause many problems in Vista which don’t always appear immediately.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

I find all this very intersting about Norton causing problems. I know I am
probably going to regret saying this but Norton came with my lap top and have
just renewed and so far it has not caused me any problems. Also Norton says
that it is compatible with Windows Mail & Vista. Is Norton really the
problem? I must say every time I read this I wonder when my W.M is going to
pack up or is it just in a few cases this happens?

All I can tell you is that in the past year we have had literally hundreds of
people report here that their Windows Mail problems disappeared
after uninstalling Norton or McAfee. It often takes several months
before the antivirus-caused corruption problems start appearing.

,I appreciate your answer Gary. It would be interesting to know although I
know you can't tell me, what that is in percentage terms. I mean if
'hundreds' have had problems and there must be thousands of Norton & McAfee
users, could it be that those 'hundreds' are doing some thing wrong? I worry
that something will go wrong with mine. Like 'SL3' my laptop came with
Norton, so I assumed it would be Ok. Could it be perhaps it is incompatible
with certain makes? Mine is a Toshiba.

I think that Toshiba is the brand that often comes with a program with
SMS in its name that interferes with Windows Mail. If you have such
a program, check what it does and whether you want to keep it
enough to tolerate any problems it causes, instead of uninstalling it.
The Google Toolbar is another program that may need this.

The Norton and McAfee antivirus programs are slow at causing
problems in Windows Mail. It often takes months. When it takes
that long to see the problems, it's hard to track down what user
action if any caused the problem.

I changed the outgoing mail port from 25 to 497(?-forget the number, but I
found it in comcast help area for windows mail..altho I have Windows live
mail...), and that stopped the problem..although from the sounds of things,
it may be months before another problem occurs. Thanks again for all the
comments..interesting..my computer is a Gateway..

I have more than 10 years experience that Norton and McAfee cause problems.
If the program isn't screwing up Windows Mail or Outlook Express then
they'll come out with an update that will.

Obviously I have no way of polling all Norton & McAfee users
to find out what percentage of them are having email problems.
I do know that the majority of problems reported in this forum
are due to corruption in Windows Mail from the antivirus.

Both Norton and McAfee have a long history of causing problems
with Outlook Express, long before there was Vista.
