Booting Trouble

Hello,
I have a Gateway laptop (1GHz, 248MB ram 20 GB hd)that was
upgraded to XP Home, and got really slow. Now I went to
put XP Pro on it and the installation took all day. Then
today I turned it on and it will not boot, it just keeps
restarting?? The bootup was even taking several minutes,
got to the XP loading screen and then goes off and starts
over.

When you say "it will not boot", do you mean the computer won't get
through the POST or that it freezes while loading Windows? It sounds
like you've got a hardware problem. Time to do some hardware tests. If
you don't have that ability, take the machine to a good local computer
repair shop (not a CompUSA/BestBuy type store).

It would get through the POST and begin loading XP but
then stop and restart. I reloaded XP again and so far it
is working but the system is still slow. Programs are slow
to set up and I ran disk clean and defrag. some
improvement.

Then I'd definitely do some hard drive and RAM testing. Sounds like the
hard drive is dying.
