If Dell does agree to send a Technician, I would backup all important data
file to external media or DVD(s).
The tech is most likely to take the easiest step first which is to
reinstall Windows, which of course will wipe
all your applications you have installed and any data.

This is an excellent point; one should not consider that the technician will
have any respect for user data. Which makes sense, since backups are the
user's responsibility.

Even if the system won't boot, it's easy to do this. Remove the hard disk,
attach it to another XP system with drive space, copy the data off. USB2
drive cases are good for this, and not expensive; just get the correct type,
IDE or SATA depending on the drive type.

Be sure you get all user data including emails, addresses, etc.

Interesting...in the July, 2008 PC Magazine survey, for example, Dell
was fourth overall in Customer Satisfaction for desktops (third if you
exclude self-built PCs) and third overall in desktop support.

Never believe the rags that accept advertising money at the same time.

In the early 90's (If I remember the timeframe right) I bought a Zeop
Pantera P90 system, it had been rated #1 in most rags for the year, it
was always getting top marks, support was always tops. My Zeos Pantera
P90 system had many defects, IRQ probelms, wire-wrap on the motherboard,
etc... 4 motherboards later I scrapped it for a clone and never had the
problems like that again, until Dell.

Well said. Ever notice there is never any bad words in Motor Trend about an
automobile that is advertised in the same magazine?

Just got a call from Dell (after complaining thru their Unresvolved issues"
on their website), they are sending 3 replacement parts to a technician
(processor, motherboard & hard drive). He will then contact me when to come
to my home to hopefully completely repair computer. We'll see what happens!

I have backed up all "data" via flashdrive, but am at a loss about backing
up programs, etc. Do I have to install them from actual program disks?

Also, is there anyway of reinstalling Microsoft Office since I have used it
on 3 computers already. This computer was one of those 3. I know the
customer is limited to number of installations and "office" is not cheap!

Thanks for all the comments & help. I will keep you informed of progress.
I welcome any additional help/comments.

Just to inform everyone, that a tech came out today & installed new mother
board & CPU. Hopefully this will fix the problem. Hard drive & power supply
tested good. Thanks to everyone for suggestions. Dell "FINALLY' got their
act together & sent parts & technician. They have called me for 4 days now
checking on the situation. I'm hoping this truly resolves the issue!
