bootcfg doesn't work

Hi, after re-installing windows, I need to get rid of a
startup option in the boot.ini file. I followed the
online advice, (ref:289022), but when I enter "bootcfg/?"
at the command prompt, I get this message:

"'bootcfg' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable system or batch file."

I have no idea how to get into this, I have done a search
for "bootcfg" but it didn't come up with any results. any
help would be very welcome.

cheers

bootcfg.exe is supposed to be in c:\windows\system32.
USe the search tool to locate it on your harddrive.
When you find it, copy it into the above location.
Then it will work.

Hi Davetest;
I have XP Home. I did a search for bootcfg.exe on my machine. No find. I
did a search on my XP CD. No find. I read KB289022 which applies to Windows XP
Professional and Windows XP Home Edition. This would indicate that bootcfg.exe
should be on my machine and CD. Where the heck is it? Any ideas?

It's on the xp pro disk (not sure about home) in the i386 folder.
It's called bootcfg.ex_ < this means it's compressed and you should
use the expand command.

Dave;
Thanks for the reply. :blush:)

My XP Home CD >> D:\I386\
BNTS.DL_
BOOTCONP.CH_
BOOTFIX.BIN
BOOTOK.EX_
BOOTVID.DL_
BOOTVRFY.EX_

bootcfg.ex_ should be listed between BNTS.DL_ and BOOTCONP.CH_. It's not
there. Also listed are all the Boot..... whatever files. Son of a gun, I've
been cheated again! Yeah, I have learned all about the expand command. In
doing some research, bootcfg.exe is supposed to be in the Recovery Console and
in [Windows .NET, Microsoft has included a command line utility called BOOTCFG].
Thanks again.
Wes
