Bootable USB key

From the factory, it seems that most are already "bootable", in that they have
a partition marked "active", and possibly have a valid boot sector on them.

If that is the case, you often only have to copy the boot files onto them
(from a bootable floppy that you can create by formattting it via Explorer
under WinXP, for example).

Many manufacturers provide some sort of utility to make their USB key
bootable. This is often not included with the device, but can be downloaded.
Sometimes the utility from one manufacterer will work on another's device, but
not always, if the CHS geometry is different, for example.

USB keys can sometimes be made to look like a bootable hard drive, but
sometimes you make them look like a Zip drive or floppy drive.

Do a Google search for the obvious, like "make USB key bootable", or "USB
boot utility" - also try "mbrtool USB". You will probably find some useful
info that way.

OK,

and can this be done with any USB zip disk ?
Or does it need to be a special bootable USB ?

From the way they are advertised it would seem you need a special. I have
seen them on www.crucial.com in the past.
Not really sure about the technical aspects, sorry.
