Boot XPe with DOS boot block on USB device?

The partition boot block on my USB key device is write protected. The
utility that formats the key will only write a DOS partition boot block on
the key. The bootprep utility from Microsoft seems to run fine and writes
an XP-compatible partition boot block, but its not there when I reboot. DOS
still starts. So, I assume the partition boot block is write protected.

Is there a way to trick XPe to run when a DOS partition boot block is used?

Mark,

If bootprep really changed boot sector then it should stay written on USB
key.

Try using diskedit.exe from Symantec to see what is written to PBR and if
disk is marked ass nonremovable, what is written in MBR.

Also you should try to format USB key from Windows XP.
