Boot up

My friends PC will only boot after several attempts. It has been used without
effective antivirus,Spyware protection. I have attempted to remove most
spyware & viruses with my software. The PC boots for a few seconds then hangs
and the monitor goes into standby mode. How do I know whether this is a
hardware problem or whether the boot has become corrupted? If necessary, can I
reinstal WinXP from the disk? If so,how,if no prompts appear on the screen to
start with? Any guidance much appreciated.

Hi Graham,

Do you make it to windows? What spec does the pc have?

If you don't make it to windows it could be that the bios maybe affected, as
the monitor goes into standby this could be a hardware issue but genraly it
would switch off from the word go not after awhile.

Check your boot devices, when the computer first switches on enter your bios
setup by pushing delete (usally this button works look for others if it
fails). Find a basic cmos setup and there will be a list of boot orders. I
generally put them in the order of CD-ROM, FLOPPY, HDD1. Place cd in if you
wish to install windows again.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks Liam
Im not sure of PC specs but is only two years old. We make it to Windows
after many attempts.I will check bios but was interested to know what effect
a virus/trojan horse may have to the start up and how I would know whether
the problem was hardware or not. I am not computer literate but enjoy
"fiddleing".thanks for you prompt reply
