boot problems

Every so often my pc will not boot properly. The scenario is as follows.

Pc is running all night, I check it in the morning and the screen is black
(I can't get the monitor to display). The only way to shut the pc off is to
turn off the power button. After that the pc will not boot. (no beep codes
or anything). If I insert my windows xp cd the pc will boot ( when it asks
to press any key to boot from cd I just leave it alone and it boots from C
drive). My boot sequence is set to "cdrom, c, a". I thought it might be the
monitor but I swapped it out with 2 other monitors, same problem. My clock
is also losing time. I scan regularly for viruses and spyware with no
problems.

Someone told me it sounds like my motherboard is failing. I have an AMD 500,
394 megs ram (3x128 pc 133). Windows Xp sp 2. The motherboard is rpbably 5
years old so its seen better days. Should I be worried about the MB failing
and taking my HD,& ram with it?

I checked my power scheme. It is set to Home office/Desk Turn monitor off
after 20 mins, turn hard drives off after 5 hrs. Hibernation enabled.

Suggestions, comments appreciated.

Make a visit to Dell or HP/Compaq. Yours could always be used as a
backup or door stop.
