Boot up Problem

When I turn PC on, it boots to login screen. I enter login
and it loads to desktop background with no icons, and
no "start" button. I can bring up Task Manager with
<alt><ctl><del> but nothing else. Tried booting in "safe"
mode and same result. Any ideas?

run the event viewer and identify which service is failing to start and
disable it

I've had a similar problem. When it loads I get the
desktop but tray icons are not all present. I've found
that if I wait 5 minutes after the log-on screen appears
before I log on then everything works OK.

This sounds like sp2. I had the same problem. I would get
a start button but system tray would'nt load anything for
ieons. So I found on this site bootivs and autorun.
Bootivs analysis what going on in the boot process.
Autorun is msconfig.exe in more complete and friendly
format and shows exactly what is being loaded up at start
up. Seems sp1 would let old driver to load but sp2 is
less complient. So I ran autorun and started disabling
startup entries on by one until I notice that my scanner
(that has drivers that can't be updated) once disabled,
my boot up time resembled my old sp1 boot up time. Well I
don't need a scanner to be loaded up, if I'm using it
once a month. If I need to run it I'll just re-check
their entries.

You can download autoruns from :

http://doc.sch130.nsc.ru/www.sysinternals.com/files/autoru
ns.zip
For bootvis, just search the internet for it and word
download.

Hey there

Experienced the same problem since SP2. I found the
problem with mine was with IIS. Have now solved it.

I did a few things, but mainly I opened the Event Viewer
(Start > Programs > Admin Tools) to identify that IIS and
WWW Publishing were hanging on start up.

So, did a few things, but mainly tried to un-install IIS
(which took a LONG time on my machine the first time, but
learnt to TURN OFF your firewall which can cause a
installation to fail because it cannot communicate with
the machine).......then re-booted and then re-installed
IIS.

Machine now has a real quick boot-up time.
