Boot Up lsass.exe system error

I am obviously not the first one hit with this virus...
I cannot boot-up windows (I get the lsass.exe system error), which means
that I cannot apply the microsoft support solution (start -> run etc).
I have tried to reboot hitting the F8 key then "last good configuration",
same result
I have tried to reboot hitting the F8 key then "safe mode with command
option", same result...

I have the Operating System CD, but i do not want (if at all possible) to
erase my hard-drive. I understand that I can use the cd to identify and fix
the problem...
but I'm terrified to do something wrong (too many options).
Could someone guide me through this?

I'd suggest asking in a newsgroup related to whatever operating system
you're using.
